TOP 10 YURI ANIME

Okay, Let’s get down 😉
In all seriousness, first of all, for those who are not aware.

WHAT IS A YURI ANIME?

Yuri anime, also known as “girls’ love” or “GL”, refers to a genre of anime that focuses on romantic or sexual relationships between female characters. The term “yuri” originated from the Japanese word for “lily,” which is often associated with same-sex relationships between women in Japanese culture.

Yuri anime typically explores themes of love, emotional connections, and romantic relationships between women. These relationships can range from innocent and subtle undertones to explicit and passionate portrayals. Yuri anime often features strong character development, intricate storylines, and a variety of narrative approaches, including drama, comedy, fantasy, or slice-of-life.

It’s worth noting that yuri anime is primarily targeted towards a female audience, but it has gained popularity among viewers of various genders and sexual orientations.
In this list, We will present to you 10 of the best Yuri anime of all time. So, without further ado, let’s dive into it.

10. Sakura Trick

Since their middle school days, Haruka Takayama and Yuu Sonoda have been inseparable best friends. Their plan was to attend Misato West High School together, but an unfortunate twist of fate separates them in the same class, with seats at opposite ends of the room. Adding to their misfortune, the school is scheduled to close down in three years, making them the last batch of first-year students. Despite these challenges, Haruka remains determined to stick with Yuu and create beautiful memories together.

Haruka, however, becomes increasingly envious as Yuu’s laid-back nature effortlessly attracts the attention of their female classmates. Recognizing her friend’s growing insecurity, Yuu decides to share an intimate, heartfelt kiss with Haruka in an empty classroom. This act deepens their bond as “special friends” and uncovers a new dimension to their unique relationship, while also bringing forth new conflicts.

9. Strawberry Panic

Aoi Nagisa, a vibrant young redhead, finds herself transferred to Starrawberry Dorms, a prestigious Catholic school exclusively for girls. The school is divided into three distinct sections known as Lulim, Miator, and Spica, each with its own president, uniforms, and unique activities. Placed in the Miator section, Nagisa quickly becomes the center of attention due to a series of incidents involving the enigmatic student Etoile, who symbolizes the unity of the three parts of the school. Among the admirers captivated by Nagisa’s presence is Shizuma, an ethereal silver-haired beauty and the idol of all the girls.

As Nagisa and Shizuma spend more time together, a deep affection begins to blossom between them, leading to a tender romance. However, their love story becomes entangled in a complex love triangle. In the midst of this emotional turmoil, Nagisa stumbles upon a heart-wrenching secret from Shizuma’s recent past, forging an even deeper bond between them.

8. Yuru Yuri

After spending a year in elementary school without her childhood friends, Akari Akaza is overjoyed to finally reunite with her second-year friends, Yui Funami and Kyouko Toshinou, at their girls’ high school. During their first year, Yui and Kyouko formed the “Amusement Club” that now occupies the room once belonging to the Tea Club. As Akari joins them, their peaceful routine is interrupted when one of Akari’s classmates, Chinatsu Yoshikawa, mistakenly believes they are still the Tea Club. Only after explaining that the Tea Club no longer exists do they manage to convince Chinatsu to join the Amusement Club, a group solely dedicated to providing entertainment for its members.

Based on Namori’s manga, Yuru Yuri is a quirky comedy that revolves around a group of girls who spend their leisure time sipping tea and lavishing praise on each other, often oblivious to the supposed main character, Akari, in their midst.

7. Seven Mortal Sins

This one gets very intense, and not just in battles but in intimacy.

Lucifer, once an esteemed Archangel and leader of the Seven Heavenly Virtues, is cast out from Heaven for rebelling against the divine will. During her descent from the heavens, she crashes through the roof of a high school church, only to be witnessed by Maria Totsuka, a gentle and quiet student.

However, Lucifer’s fall continues as she plunges into the depths of Hell. It is there that she encounters Leviathan, an aspiring Demon Lord and fervent fan of Lucifer. United by their shared desire to overthrow the ruling authorities of Hell, known as the Seven Sins, led by Belial, they form an alliance.

Their initial attempts to challenge the Seven Sins prove futile, as the combined powers of the Sins repel Lucifer and bind her divine abilities with a Garb of Punishment, effectively transforming her into a Demon Lord.

Driven by a thirst for revenge, Lucifer, accompanied by Leviathan, returns to Earth and forces Maria to become her immortal slave. With this unlikely group, Lucifer embarks on a quest to subdue the Seven Sins, aiming to break free from the curse imposed by her Garb and reclaim her freedom.

6. Scum’s Wish

Feeling hot yet? Cause the temperature is only going to rise up from here.

Hanabi Yasuraoka and Mugi Awaya may appear to be the perfect couple to those around them, but beneath the surface, they both carry a secret pain: they are each in love with someone they cannot be with.

Hanabi has harbored feelings for her childhood friend and neighbor, Narumi Kanai, for as long as she can remember. So when Narumi becomes her new homeroom teacher, she is overjoyed. However, her happiness quickly turns to despair when Narumi catches the attention of the music teacher, Akane Minagawa, and a relationship blossoms between them.

On the other hand, Mugi has been infatuated with Akane ever since she tutored him in middle school. By chance, he encounters Hanabi in the hallway, and their shared loneliness draws them closer. In an attempt to fill the void left by their unrequited love, they enter into a physical relationship with each other, using one another as substitutes.

As Hanabi and Mugi navigate this complicated arrangement, they grapple with their own desires and the pain of loving someone unattainable.

5. Citrus

Yuzu, an elegant young girl, had imagined her first day at a new school after her mother’s remarriage to be quite different. Little did she know that she would be attending an ultra-strict and conservative girls’ school. Instead of the sweet high school romance she had envisioned, she finds herself entangled with the stern student council president, Mei, who happens to be her new stepsister. As Yuzu navigates their complicated relationship, she begins to realize that feelings of hatred and attraction can be closer than she ever imagined.

Citrus stands as another example of a contemporary romantic lesbian story. The artwork and animation in the series are well done, although not necessarily extraordinary. The music effectively complements the development of the story in the anime. The primary focus lies on Yuzu and Mei, the central characters of the show. The narrative delves into their emotional pasts and explores the complexities of their romantic relationship as stepsisters. It is highly recommended for those seeking a genuine yuri anime that truly centers on the intricacies of relationships.

4. Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid

If you think you’ve seen it all, just watch this one. In the world of Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid, arousal results in your partner turning into a weapon if certain conditions are met. Here’s a quick synopsis.
Mamori Tokonome finds herself transferred to Mermaid, a specially designed quarantine island for individuals possessing extraordinary powers. Soon after her arrival, Mamori becomes the target of an attack, but she is saved by a newly transferred girl named Mirei. However, their assailants persist, and the situation grows dire. In a moment of desperation, Mirei kisses Mamori, triggering a remarkable transformation: Mamori turns into a powerful sword. Empowered by Mamori’s newfound form, Mirei wields the sword and launches a decisive counterattack against their enemies, fighting to protect themselves and reclaim control of the situation.

3. Maria-sama Ga Miteru

At Lillian Girl’s Academy, a prestigious Catholic school in Western Japan, a new generation of girls prepares for their future. Within the halls of this esteemed institution, a tender romance blossoms between Yumi Fukuzawa, a shy and introverted freshman, and Sachiko Ogasawara, the school’s shining star.

Maria-sama Ga Miteru serves as a definitive example of modern yuri storytelling. This series artfully incorporates various tropes from 19th Century yuri, such as the captivating setting of a girls’ academy, the endearing big sister/little sister dynamic, and a fascination with religious symbolism. Not only does it hold significant importance in the history of yuri, but it also presents a captivating and heartfelt narrative filled with exquisite artwork and endearing characters.

2. Bloom Into You

Yuu Koito, a girl who struggles to comprehend the concept of love, forms an unlikely friendship with Touko Nanami, a fellow student at her school. As their connection deepens, Touko, a second-year student, confesses her romantic feelings to Yuu, who is unable to reciprocate them. However, as their bond strengthens, Yuu begins to explore her own emotions and understanding of love, leading to a blossoming romance between them.

What sets Bloom Into You apart from other yuri series is its sincere and mature approach to romance. The show doesn’t rely on excessive drama to captivate its audience; instead, it focuses on developing its characters and their relationships. Despite being high school students, both Yuu and Touko are depicted as multi-dimensional individuals, and their connection evolves as they navigate the complexities of growing up together.

1. Konohana Kitan

Konohana Kitan presents an enchanting tale combining fox girls and “Yurification,” a perfect match indeed. The story revolves around Yuzu, a fox girl who embarks on a new job at a hot spring inn called Onsen. As she navigates her new surroundings, Yuzu finds herself inexperienced and unsure of how to handle the challenges she encounters.

Throughout her journey, Yuzu forms meaningful connections with other girls she meets, forging new friendships and deepening existing bonds. The anime portrays a heartwarming lesbian romance that is hard to resist, as Yuzu’s everyday life intertwines with the lives of these captivating characters. It’s a delightful and wholesome journey that leaves little room for anything but affection for this charming tale of love and friendship.
