NETFLIX’S ONE PIECE SEASON 2, EVERYTHING WE KNOW

Caution: Spoilers for Netflix’s One Piece season 1.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of One Piece has achieved an impressive feat, becoming the most-watched show in 84 countries during its debut weekend. This accomplishment surpasses the viewership records previously set by popular series such as Stranger Things and Wednesday.

Considering Netflix’s past endeavors in adapting anime into live-action formats faced challenges, the success of this adaptation is a welcomed development. Iñaki Godoy, who portrays Monkey D. Luffy, had pledged a faithful adaptation that respects the original manga and its narrative. With this promise fulfilled, expectations are now soaring for the return of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew of pirates.

Fortunately, fans didn’t experience a long wait for an update, as both Netflix and series creator Eiichiro Oda promptly announced that a second season is currently in the works.

More recently, we were granted a glimpse into the Netflix writer’s room, where the dedicated individuals responsible for guiding us through the upcoming escapades of The Straw Hat Pirates were introduced. However, the burning questions remain: when can we expect the second season to grace our screens, and which characters from the manga might make their appearance? For all the essential details, continue reading.

Will there be a Season 2 for One Piece on Netflix?

Absolutely! On September 14, 2023, fans of the Netflix One Piece series received an exciting announcement from the series creator, Eiichiro Oda, delivered via his personal transponder, revealing that the streaming platform had officially renewed the show for a second season.

You can watch the complete announcement above, which also includes a teaser about a character that is sure to delight fans.

For those well-versed in One Piece lore, the conclusion of season 1 set the stage for an action-packed season 2.

In the closing moments of episode 8, Luffy successfully vanquishes the menacing shark-themed villain Arlong and his stronghold, famously known as Arlong Park. Nami reconciles with her sister, reuniting with the Straw Hat crew, and they embark on new adventures.

Simultaneously, Koby reveals that Luffy now possesses the highest bounty in the East Blue, putting a target on his back. This leads the group to make the bold decision to set sail for the Grand Line, though it appears that the Marines are not done pursuing them.

Season 2 appears poised to introduce another significant antagonist to the Netflix One Piece universe, namely Smoker, a formidable pirate with a penchant for cigars and a deep-seated animosity toward the Straw Hat Pirates. What makes Smoker especially formidable is his ability to transform into cigar smoke, making him a challenging adversary for our beloved crew to confront.

When can we expect Netlix’s One Piece Season 2 to be released

In that same video message from Eiichiro Oda, he acknowledged that the scriptwriting process might take some time, but interestingly, the production of the second season of One Piece is progressing more rapidly than one might anticipate.

According to a recent interview with Variety, Tomorrow Studios president Becky Clements mentioned that the second season could potentially be ready for release within a year to 18 months, contingent upon the conclusion of the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

She stated, “Realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility. Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air.”

Due to the uncertainties surrounding the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, it’s challenging to provide an exact premiere date for the next season. However, if we were to speculate, a late-2024 or early-2025 release window appears plausible.

What can we expect from the 2nd Season

Indeed, as fans of One Piece are well aware, the Straw Hat Pirates are set to embark on their journey toward the Grand Line, and based on the series’ rich history, it’s safe to assume that their path won’t be without its share of challenges. Anticipated obstacles and adversaries are likely to hinder Luffy’s progress in his quest to obtain the elusive One Piece.

According to the original manga, the Alabasta saga is the next narrative arc, following the initial East Blue saga that was adapted. This saga comprises six distinct story arcs, with episodes and chapters aligning with the manga and anime. However, before delving into the Alabasta saga, the manga takes a brief detour to Loguetown. Given the tease of Smoker in the final episode’s post-credits scene, it’s reasonable to assume that Season 2’s inaugural episode will commence there. The Loguetown storyline involves Smoker’s relentless pursuit of Luffy and the Straw Hat crew due to his intense animosity toward pirates. Smoker reappears in subsequent arcs, including the Little Garden Arc and the Alabasta Arc. It’s easy to envision Smoker shadowing the Straw Hat Pirates throughout the season, much like fellow marine, Garp, did in Season 1. If the live-action One Piece continues to faithfully follow Eiichiro Oda’s storyline, fans can anticipate the crew heading toward Whisky Peak, where they become the targets of the criminal organization known as Baroque Works.

As evidenced by Zoro’s confrontation with a Baroque Works member in the first episode of season 1, it’s reasonable to expect that Baroque Works will return with a vengeance in Netflix’s One Piece.
