The central character in the story is Ai Hoshino, whose brutal murder at the end of the episode left an indelible mark on the viewers. Although her name holds no particular significance when written in Katakana, it takes on a profound meaning when expressed in Kanji. The Kanji characters for her name reveal that ‘Ai’ represents love or affection, ‘Hoshi’ signifies stars, and ‘no’ means field or wilderness. This hints at her ultimate fate as a ‘star’ who ‘loves’ everyone, subtly suggesting her identity before her death.
Due to her abusive upbringing, Ai Hoshino believed that love was a deception and lying was a way of expressing affection. This belief was reinforced when she was scouted for the entertainment industry by Ichigo Saitou, who deemed deception as an acceptable trait.
The death of Ai in Oshi no Ko was inspired by the tragic incident that occurred in May 2016, when Mayu Tomita, a renowned 20-year-old Japanese singer and actress, was stabbed. Tomita was well-known for her role as ‘Ai Takano’ in the web drama, Secret Girls. The perpetrator of the crime was a 27-year-old man who had harassed her on social media and sent her inappropriate gifts. He stalked her and even managed to obtain her address, leading to the unfortunate stabbing incident.
Fortunately, Tomita survived the attack, but the physical and emotional scars from the incident lingered on, leaving a lasting impact on her.
4. The Serial Killer
The first episode of Oshi no Ko depicts Ai’s murder at the hands of an obsessed fan, but it was actually orchestrated by the father of her children, Hikaru Kamiki. He is a notorious serial killer who indirectly targets idols and actresses. To prey on Ai, he disclosed her location to a suicidal and obsessed fan named Ryosuke, who fatally stabbed her.
Ai Hoshino’s blog and smartphone shared the password “45510,” which stood for the initials of the four founding members of B Komachi. The password was created using Japanese flick keyboard format with 4 for Takamine, 55 for Nino, 1 for Ai, and 0 for Watanabe.
